Can a Sweatshirt or T-Shirt Truly Be Authentic?

Can a Sweatshirt or T-Shirt Truly Be Authentic?

Authenticity is a big part of what we do here at Plurawl. In fact, it forms part of the foundation of our business. We started our company as a means of helping those of us in the LatinX community be more comfortable with our authentic selves, to the extent that we are not afraid to be who we are regardless of our circumstances. That is all well and good, but what about our products? Can a sweatshirt or T-shirt truly be authentic?

In a word, yes. Every T-shirt and sweatshirt we sell is designed around this idea of authenticity. To that end, our T-shirts and sweatshirts are just as authentic as we are. But perhaps that deserves some clarification.

Not Brand Authenticity

When it comes to T-shirts and sweatshirts, one way to define authenticity is in terms of branding. If you are purchasing an authentic Plurawl T-shirt for example, it will have our label. Likewise for products from any other brand. But when we talk about authenticity in terms of what it means to be Latina, Latino, etc., it is not brand that we are concerned about.

The authenticity we are trying our best to promote is authenticity to oneself. It is a type of authenticity that demonstrates you are not afraid of who you are, you are not ashamed of who you are, and you have no intention of pretending to be someone or something you are not.

Authenticity Takes Many Forms

One of the things we find so fascinating about authenticity is that it takes many forms. This is evidenced by the fact that there is no hard-and-fast definition of the term. Business leaders often define authenticity as a form of honesty and integrity. Psychologists speak of authenticity in terms of self-esteem and confidence.

The best way to understand authenticity is to look at what it is not. Authenticity definitely is not denying who and what you truly are in order to satisfy other people. Authenticity is not hiding behind a facade so that other people do not see the real you. It is not sacrificing your principles in order to get along.

A clear understanding of what authenticity is not opens the door to understanding what it is. And with that understanding comes the realization that authenticity takes on many forms. Authenticity is:

  • being truthful to yourself about yourself
  • being true to the present moment
  • being honest about your thoughts and emotions
  • aligning your actions with your thoughts and emotions
  • showing up for yourself (taking care of yourself).

These five bullet points do not define authenticity completely. They are just five points on a very broad spectrum. The two things that tie them all together are self and truth.

As Authentic as You Are

We can now finally get to the question of whether or not T-shirts and sweatshirts can truly be authentic Based on what has been covered in this post thus far, we would have to say yes. In fact, we would go so far as to say that your T-shirts and sweatshirts are as authentic as you are.

If you have chosen to buy LatinX sweatshirts and T-shirts from Plurawl, is it because you are a proud member of the LatinX community and you share our vision to live proudly? If so, whatever you order is authentic in the sense that it is a tangible extension of your own authenticity.

We believe in being authentic in every situation. Sometimes, that means wearing clothes that speak to who you are as a person. That's what authentic T-shirts and sweatshirts are all about.
