Why Does Work Feel So Emotionally Draining? 3 Journal Prompts for Toxic Work Environments and Burnout
Sometimes it’s easier to vent to strangers on the internet than the people closest to us.
Not because strangers know us better…
but because people who haven’t experienced toxic work environments often underestimate how deeply they affect your mental health.
A lot of people think work stress only stays at work.
But the truth is, a difficult manager or unhealthy workplace can slowly impact:
your confidence
your nervous system
your sleep
your self-worth
the way you see yourself every day
That’s part of why we started going live on TikTok every Monday-Friday at 7PM EST.
We wanted to create a space where people could say the things they usually keep trapped in their head.
Recently, someone commented:
“My manager is making my job unbearable and I feel like a target every day.”
And honestly?
A lot of people know this feeling.
Because when you constantly feel criticized, micromanaged, singled out, or emotionally unsafe at work…
your brain stops viewing work as just a job.
It starts treating it like a threat.
And after a while, you start waking up already anxious:
overthinking every interaction
preparing for criticism
questioning yourself constantly
walking on eggshells
feeling emotionally exhausted before the day even starts
And one of the hardest parts?
Toxic environments can slowly convince you that the problem is you.
Especially when you’re exposed to stress every single day.
But being mistreated consistently does not automatically mean you’re incompetent, difficult, or failing.
Sometimes your nervous system is simply reacting to an environment that no longer feels emotionally safe.
So here are 3 journal prompts I’d ask someone in this situation:
1. What specific behaviors or situations at work are making me feel targeted?
How do those moments affect the way I see myself outside of work?
2. Have I started internalizing this environment to the point where I’m questioning my value, confidence, or abilities overall?
3. What would a healthy work environment actually feel like for me emotionally?
How far is my current reality from that?
Because sometimes the hardest part about toxic workplaces…
is how quietly they convince people to shrink themselves just to survive them.
Next time your brain is spiraling, open Plurawl...vent...and it will help you make sense of your thoughts.
The w in is silent, but you don't have to be.
