Why Do We Realize What We Had After It’s Gone? 3 Journal Prompts for Regret, Love, and Emotional Clarity

Sometimes it’s easier to vent to strangers on the internet than the people closest to us.

Not because strangers know us better…
but because they don’t always rush to tell us:

  • “just move on”

  • “everything happens for a reason”

  • “if it’s meant to be, it’ll come back”

Some situations are more emotionally complicated than that.

Especially when the relationship didn’t end because the love disappeared.

That’s part of why we started going live on TikTok every Monday-Friday at 7PM EST.

We wanted to create a space where people could say the things they usually keep trapped in their head.

Recently, someone commented:

“I’m in love with my ex but I screwed it up just need my man’s back. He knows how I feel. I just gave up over a lack of connection in the moment. Now he’s hesitant though.”

And honestly?

A lot of people know this feeling.

Because sometimes relationships don’t fall apart from one huge moment.

Sometimes they slowly break down through:

  • emotional distance

  • miscommunication

  • exhaustion

  • unmet needs

  • giving up too early instead of working through discomfort

And when the emotions settle…
clarity shows up.

Suddenly you start seeing:

  • how much the person mattered

  • what you could’ve communicated better

  • what you took for granted

  • how fear, frustration, or emotional disconnection affected your decisions

And honestly?
Regret can feel heavy when you know the person still matters to you.

But one of the hardest parts about trying to reconnect after a breakup…

is accepting that someone can still love you and still hesitate to trust the situation again.

Because emotional safety takes longer to rebuild than emotional feelings.

So here are 3 journal prompts I’d ask someone in this situation:

1. What exactly was missing in the relationship that made me emotionally give up at the time?

Did I clearly communicate those needs before disconnecting emotionally?

2. Am I missing this person…

or am I grieving the realization that I didn’t fully appreciate the relationship while I had it?

3. If this relationship were given another chance, what would genuinely need to change emotionally, communication-wise, and behaviorally for things to become healthier this time?

Because sometimes the hardest part about regret…

is realizing growth came after the loss instead of before it.

Next time your brain is spiraling, open Plurawl...vent...and it will help you make sense of your thoughts.

The w in is silent, but you don't have to be.
